Pfizer sues Wanyong.com for maliciously registering the "Viagra" domain name
Pfizer, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, recently took Shenzhen Wanyong Information Network to court in Beijing. Pfizer sued Wanyong.com for maliciously registering the domain name "VIAGRA" (commonly known as "Viagra").

According to the Southern Metropolis Daily, Wanyong Information Network owns one of the two major portals in Shenzhen, "Shenzhen Hotline". Wanyong Information Network registered the domain name "WWW.VIAGRA.COM.CN" as early as July 23, 1998, when "Viagra" was not allowed to be launched in China, although Pfizer registered WWW.VIAGRA abroad. The international domain name of COM, but the domain name with the suffix .CN can only be registered in China.

A few years ago, Pfizer successfully registered the trademark "VIAGRA" in China, but it did not register it online. The purpose of Wanyong.com's registration at that time was to use this domain name to build a website on men's health care, but this plan was not implemented, and Wanyong.com did not use this domain name for any commercial activities.

Pfizer believes that "VIAGRA" is the company's original wording and a specialized pharmaceutical trademark. Pfizer sued Wanyong for two main reasons: first, malicious registration and infringement of trademark rights; second, unfair competition. Pfizer asked Wanyong.com to publicly apologize and give up the domain name, but did not request financial compensation.

People from Wanyong.com said that in fact, as early as July 23 this year, Wanyong.com had automatically given up ownership of this domain name. Because after two years of registration, that is, as of July 23 this year, Wanyong.com has not paid the annual registration fee of about 1,500 yuan, which means that it has given up the ownership of the domain name. A few months after giving up the domain name, Pfizer sued Wanyong.com, which really surprised Wanyong.com.

According to reports, Wanyong.com’s lawyers have submitted a statement of defense. Wanyong.com does not rule out the possibility of mediation or counterclaims
